she’s six && a half  (  nearly seven ! ’  )  when her older brother dutifully takes her ahead to their grandfathers room in the hospital. she runs straight to him despite the snide comments christian mutters under his breath, not noticing for a second how pale the man in the bed is. she had been asking to go see him for days && knows she might not see him again for a long time mother had fallen out with gramsy after all.

she curls into his side && he laughs about how  s i l l y  she’s being  (  her grandfather is invincible after all, he’ll be home in days  )  but he still runs his hand through her long hair && holds her as tightly as he can with weak arms. she falls asleep there && when they wake her up to go she clings to him ;; BEGS to stay despite knowing she’ll suffer for it later. the bruises on her arm still ache from where her mothers nails had dug into the soft skin.

they grudgingly agree only when he steps in && tells them to GO, he’ll get someone to take her home later. she watches the clock the entire time willing it to go slower, to give them more time, but it only seems to go faster. with little time left he tells her to lie down with him because he has a story to tell her.

he tells her the story of how he met gramsy, how they fell in love, && she hangs on every word. he tells her about how everyone around them didn’t want them together && how it nearly didn’t work out but they loved each other so much they found a way to make it work.

he tells her it’s not a love story  (  no dot, it’s not a love story. it’s about fighting for what you want  )  but she still thinks of it as one. it’s the greatest love story she knows && the only one that doesn’t end in tragedy she’ll ever believe in. he dies that same week && she cries && cries && when she goes to the grave clutching her grandmothers hand she sees the cactus from their windowsill there. when she thinks of what to buy kara twenty years later she thinks back to the only good love story she knows.

i bought your grandmother roses && gave them to her the day i met her but they died a few days later. when i asked her to marry me i gave her a cactus —- yeah, one of those spiky things. flowers don’t last forever but a cactus can live for over a hundred years even when it’s tough ;; i thought it showed our love would last too.

she hopes she has the same luck.
